Active Directory Server (AD)
An AD server is used to store user configuration details of "My Documents" and "Desktop
Icons". It also allows the central control of computer configurations of "Windows
Auto Updates" and "Internet Explorer Homepage". The AD server is mainly used to
allow employees to ‘logon’ to any computer with their username and password and
access their own files. The AD server also allows you to restrict access to files
and folders.
|
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
The role of the DHCP Server is to automatically
assign all devices on a network with an IP Address, DNS server address. This means
that when a laptop or new computer arrives on your network you do not have to find
and supply these details yourself.
|
SQL Server
The SQL Server is a database server that can store vast amounts of sales,
product and other data for use when needed to create reports and keep track of orders.
This server, like the file server, allows you to store this information in one location
for easy access, but with one major difference. Computer applications can access
this information and run calculations on this data to give you historical information
and live information in seconds.

Directory Naming System (DNS)
A DNS server is used to allow communication between
computers, printers, other devices and the internet. You already use at least one
DNS server just to browse the internet, this is hosted by your internet provider,
but internal computer communications can also benefit from a DNS server. The role
of the DNS server is to translate the IP address (Internet Protocol Address) to
an easy to remember name. For example a computers name maybe "JohnsPC" but its IP
Address could be "192.168.152.124" (IPv4) or "2001:db8:1f70::999:de8:7648:6e8" (IPv6).
The DNS server would automatically link the two so that you only need to remember
"JohnsPC".
|
File Server
The role of the file server is to allow storage of all your files in
one place. This will enable you to access them from any computer, control access
to the files by use of an active directory server. The file server generally has
a large storage capacity, therefore freeing up storage space on individual computers.
|
Exchange Server (E-Mail)
An exchange server is an e-mail server that holds your
e-mails. If your computer was to fail the exchange server would still have all your
e-mails along with any items in your outlook calendar. The exchange server supplies
you with many ways to assess your e-mails, Outlook, e-mails clients, webmail and
mobile phones. Using a windows mobile phone you can have your e-mails sent directly
to your phone.
